Background

When most people think of Mauritius, they picture a beautiful volcanic island, surrounded by vibrant, turquois seas and sandy white beaches. It’s the perfect holiday destination for peace and tranquility in the middle of the Indian Ocean. However, the island has a dark and sad history…

‘Le Morne’ transports you back to 1809 and tells the heartbreaking story of a slave’s journey from his capture in Mozambique by the French, to his arrival on Mauritius and his escape from the sugar plantations to the mountains known as ‘Le Morne.’

Why this story?

You’re probably wondering what my connection to ‘Le Morne’ is. Well, my mother was born in Mauritius and ever since I first set foot on the island as a fascinated 7 year old back in 1989, I fell in love with the place, the culture and most of all the people.

The people of Mauritius are a cultural mix of Indian, Chinese, African and French, so naturally I was intrigued to understand the history of this unique island. After asking a lot of questions and doing some of my own research, I discovered one very special mountain in Mauritius that held a dark and mysterious story within it’s form. This mountain is called ‘Le Morne’ and is recognised as a World Heritage Site for a number of years now.

My film centers around one particular story linked to this iconic national landmark that will hopefully help viewers truely understand the pain and suffering that came before all the tourists arrived. Without doubt, this was a story that I had to tell.

“Le Morne is about the power of faith and how everything is connected”
